Overview of CAWL League and the Fauquier Warhawks Wrestling Team

The Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL) is a 15 year-old and under kids amateur wrestling league in the Washington DC metropolitan area. The CAWL usually consists of around 16 teams that practice and compete during the fall and winter months. Most teams are active from around the beginning of November to early March. Among other things the League strives to prepare wrestlers for high school wrestling and teach good sportsmanship. Weight classes range from 50 pounds to heavyweight (200 pounds) with increments of 5 pounds up to the 115 pound weight class, and 7, 8, 15, 20, 35 pound increments after 115 pounds. There is a 200 pound limit heavyweight class in the CAWL which may decrease by 5 or 10 pounds at the end of the season. All teams participate in dual meets during the season and compete in the CAWL League Championships at the end of the season. There is also a CAWL preseason open tournament in early December and all CAWL wrestlers are strongly encouraged to participate.

In early March usually the top six wrestlers who place in the CAWL League Championships at each weight class receive trophies and qualify to wrestle in the Maryland/Virginia States Association Championships ("MD/VA States"). High school JV wrestlers are eligible to participate in the CAWL championships, but do not advance to the MD/VA States. The MD/VA States is a two-day competition about one week following the CAWL Championships. The CAWL Champioinships and the MDVA States are the last mandatory CAWL events of the season. Wrestlers and their families and coaches from three leagues - Washington (CAWL), Baltimore (MJWL), and Arundel (AAWL) areas - join in the season finale. The top eight wrestlers at each weight class receive MD/VA States Championships awards and the top three teams receive awards.

In 2004 Fauquier launched their first Beltway team and since then have had a team in this league. The Warhawks team holds practice three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in Fauquier High School wrestling room. This practice level if for the advanced youth wrestlers of all ages and of all weights.
